Synopsis

Director, David Redmon shows "Mardi Gras : Made in china" that he follows itinerary of Mardi Gras beads from bead factory in Fuzhou, china to the place of carnival, New Orleans and then to exhibition of art works by recycling the beads art galleries in New York city. After two years of coaxing, Redmon finally convinced Dom Carlone(Bead distributor for Accent Annex) to allow him access to the factory. The film exposes the harsh reality of factory life, the tight rules and extreme discipline of beadwork, and the contrasting ways in which pleasure and pain are woven into the making and consuming of Mardi Gras beads. When each group is shown images of the other, their various reactions appear confusedly how the unfair system is kept in place or why Americans take off their clothes. Ultimately, "Mardi Gras: Made in China" is a story of globalization told with humor and sadness by the owner of a bead factory in China; the largest Mardi Gras bead distributor in the world; revelers who exchange beads during the festivities in New Orleans; a bead artist who
transforms the discards into art; and four teenage workers in China who make Mardi Gras beads all for the purpose of tossing them away. To quote the filmmaker, David Redmon, "it's a film that involves nudity, war, oil, exploitation of labor, social movements against capitalism, and beads."

Director :
David Redmon is a self-taught independent filmmaker who assisted in creating the Calle y Media Collective. Redmon is devoted to establishing human, social, and economic justice through the weapon of filmmaking. "Mardi Gras: Made in China" is his first documentary.Currently, Redmon
is completing a feature documentary titled "Border Dreams". "Border Dreams" follows two maquiladora workers in Reynosa, Mexico who produce Victoria's Secret bras for North American consumers. His third work in progress is a documentary short titled "A Day in the Life of Palestine." His final project in the globalization series is titled "Carnivals of Resistance," which addresses five years of direct action in the Americas.
